Neutral Grounding Reactors are single phase units, and are installed at specific locations in the transmission network, particularly at the neutral of large power transformers. They are used to limit the line to ground fault current under system earth fault conditions to specified levels.

Neutral Grounding Reactors are widely preferred over other resistors mainly because of much lower losses arising from the unbalance currents. It is widely accepted practice for improving the transient stability in EHV transmission systems where single pole reclosing is needed.

Neutral Grounding Reactors interrupt secondary arc currents produced by capacitive and inductive coupling with the two energized phases of the same circuit or with the parallel circuit in case of double circuit lines. And it can be installed along with the already available line connected shunt reactors to reduce the magnitude of secondary arc current.
