Looking For Damping Reactor? Here Is How to Choose the Right One

  • 23 Jul, 2019

Damping reactors are meant to limit switching inrush current in the capacitor. And this is why it is also called capacitor damping reactors which are able to withstand a rated inrush current. They should be high enough to cover all recognized cases of switching the capacitor battery or battery sections.

You must know the relevant inrush resonant frequency and provide the information about to reactor supplier so you can get the reactor which is capable enough to meet your requirements related to controlling inrush current in capacitor and keep it to the mark  that does not affects the capacitor performance.

Damping reactors are air core reactors, which do not use any metal, and are used for reducing transients and inrush currents that may cause damage to your capacitor.

The reactor is connected in series and it can be connected with one or more capacitors. When connected in series, the reactor limits the inrush peak current into the components to the level that cannot

When connected in series with the capacitor the reactor reduces the inrush peak current into the components to a value which cannot stress the insulation and damage the internal connections of the capacitor elements.

There are different types such as SA, SB and Sc, and each is meant to limit the current transients to the level that is suitable for the capacitor units and reduce surge currents into corresponding control devices to acceptable values. Damping reactors are used for:

  • Capacitor banks formed by several steps
  • Several capacitor banks connected in the same busbar
  • Very high network short-circuit power in relation to the power of the capacitor bank to be connected
  • Frequent capacitor bank control operations

There are plenty of benefits using the damping reactor. For example, this increases the lifespan of equipment and capacitor units, and this is the main advantage.

The damping reactors are suitable for:

  • Indoor use: – For up to 12 kV, there is no need of support insulators. But for higher voltage levels, you should choose the damping reactors with support insulators.
  • Outdoor use: – If you are looking for damping reactor for outdoor use, you should, regardless of ‘what is the service voltage’, you must use appropriate outdoor post insulators.

Whether you are looking for outdoor or indoor use, the reactor you choose to buy should be designed in accordance with the continuous load current that your capacitor is exposed to.

That is not all to keep in mind when it comes to buying damping reactor that performs well. Installation location is also a factor, which can impact the working of your reactor. The reactor should be installed properly and at the right place which must be clean, no harmful gas, steam, electric conductivity and explosive dust.

It, therefore, is important to carefully choose your damping reactor supplier. No matter what your requirements and where you want to use it – indoor or outdoor – you can completely rely on TEEE, a leading supplier of a wide range of high-end transmission, electrical, and energy equipment.
